I would ask all members who have not replied to the email regarding the Promulgation of our pending members to please do so. Also, I would ask all members to keep working on obtaining new members to help bolster our club’s membership. It was pleasing to see the larger attendance of members and guests at last weeks and I would be pleased to see this keep growing.
I wish to take this opportunity to thank all our female members and friends for your support over the years and remember that t is your day on 8th March (International Women’s Day)
To our program director Jenny, I would like to thank her for organising such a good variation of speakers which I am sure our members appreciate.
I am sure this week’s speaker Greg Page – Heart of the Nation will be very informative, and I ask all members attending to mix with the many guests we have attending. Please don’t forget that is at RSL at our normal times. This night will give us the opportunity to associate with other club members and like-minded people.
It always amazes me of how quickly the year disappears as it never went this quick in my school days and with over half the year gone we are now looking at PETS seminars and I know PE Gordon is working on his coming year as President.
I again look forward to seeing you all on Tuesday at the RSL for a great night of fun.

Am I Fierce & Scary?
Ugandan Orphanage
Dear Rotary, Last year I spent time in Ruhija, South-West Uganda. There I met a woman called Happy, who is Vice-Chairwoman of the local community and Director of an Orphanage School, which provides food and accommodation for all its students. I also spent time with the Batwa people, who live on the outskirts of Ruhija after being forcibly removed from the nearby forest when it was turned into a national park 30 or so years ago. For my birthday this year (today), I am doing a fundraiser for the orphanage and the Batwa people. Having communicated with Happy, the funds for the orphanage would go towards school supplies, food, clothes, and mattresses. When there I was struck that 3 kids needed to share the same bed, on hard metal frames with mattresses that were almost completely fallen apart. We shared lunch together, and the 30 or 40 children shared between them what would be lunch for one or two people in Australia. I have never met children so eager to learn, but quality food and sleep are important for learning so helping with this would help the children’s education.
Y’know Warren puts his hand up for a container and his supplier gives him a huge discount, AND has it accredited at the same time because it’s for Rotary, and Warren picks it up and delivers.
Then a bloke puts his hand up and says he will pay for the container, because it is for Rotary and the Mongolian kids “on the heap”.
Then a bloke who was staying with us for a few days put his hand in his pocket and dragged out $200 to spend on the kids and add to the container.
Then the Salvos offered their shop and a shed as a drop off point for stuff for the kids because it is for Rotary.
Then a bloke (Stewart Heard) comes out of the woodwork when he heard (sorry couldn’t resist it) about the project and offers 7 lockers (on Miriam’s list), his dad delivers them to the Men’s Shed, who have kindly offered to cut them in half and make good so that we can send 14 small lockers for the kids, and they will do this for nothing because it is for Rotary and “the kids”. The aforementioned dad then said he will pick them up when ready and deliver to the “Donations In Kind” Rotary Shed.
Then a lady heard about what we are doing and brought around 5 garbags full of blankets pillows and clothing, not all suitable for “the kids” (not on the list), but I’m sure you get the drift.
If that don’t warm the cockles I dunno wot will!! Brilliant.
cheers jakal
MBHS Shelter Box Update
Dear Rotarian
I hope you and your family are safe and well.
It has been quite a month. Events in Türkiye and Syria have shocked the world and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine has just passed its one-year anniversary.
I have been blown away by the instant generosity of our supporters and would like to give my sincere thanks to all those that have donated. I'd also like to make a special mention of the many Rotary Clubs that have mobilised to raise and donate much-needed funds. They have been amazing!
Shelter remains the priority for people across Türkiye and Syria. At least two million people have lost their homes in Türkiye, and more than 80,000 people in Syria have been displaced – many not for the first time. Hundreds of thousands of people are without adequate shelter, including many in harder-to-reach rural areas. We are working hard to change this.
ShelterBox has an emergency fundraising appeal to help people affected by the earthquakes and other disasters around the world, but here are plenty of other ways you can show your solidarity with those affected by disaster and conflict. There are details below, including an exciting trekking opportunity in America's legendary Yosemite National Park!
This month's quote comes from Albert Schweitzer, "The first step in the evolution of ethics is a sense of solidarity with other human beings."
Thanks for being part of the team. Stay safe.

Environment Forum
For many years Clubs in our District have supported their communities by undertaking environmental projects, well before Rotary added the Environment as a seventh Area of Focus. Our Forum planned for 11 March will have many facets, and will be of interest to all Rotarians. What we have scheduled is
Keynote address by Past RI President Ian Riseley (and current International Chair of the Rotary Foundation). A long term advocate for the environment, who challenged us in 2017/18 to plant 1.2 million trees, and easily surpassed his target. Ian will inform us what is happening around the Rotary world of an environmental nature, and even more importantly how we can use Foundation funding towards our environmental projects. Ian is an engaging speaker, and undoubtedly the best qualified person to share these messages.
A Calperum update. For over two decades Clubs in our District have been involved with Calperum Station (just out of Renmark) in many different ways. In the last couple of months the River Murray waters have reached higher than any of us have ever seen, but fortunately the damage was less than we anticipated. Julie Robertson, Operations Manager at Calperum, will provide us with an update on the floods, tasks that need to be done soon, plus their strategic plans for the future.
Soap Box spots. Five short presentations will highlight the breadth of environmental projects happening in the District, and how your club could become more involved. You will learn how to engage with schools, local councils, and even influence a state government to enact legislation.
Obviously there will be some time to answer questions during the formal part of the Forum, or over refreshments to follow.
We have sufficient space in the auditorium for several representatives from each club, so we encourage every Club to send at least two participants. Book via TryBooking Ref https://www.trybooking.com/events/landing/1002792 Queries can be directed to myself on will4444sa@gmail.com, or 0414 645402 (leave a message if the call is not answered).
