Meeting report 3333

Sandra Batistich has made a significant Mental Health initiative in founding Moving Ahead a NGO funded by community grants. She has had 15 years work experience in the field and is proactive with the key objective of early intervention in mental health. Chuckle & Knuckle is a 12 week Fun Course she has developed using humour to help reduce the barriers in seeking help for Mental Health. The courses are FREE and teach participants how to interupt their negative thought processes and reduces the feeling of helplessness. She takes referals from GP's and unemployment centres or self referals. Suicide prevention is on the agenda as ie Cognative Behaviour Therapy. Isolation is a major problem and males have the highest rate of depression. The age demographics is from 18years to 75 years with 35 to 65 being the main group which may surprise some. Rotarian Sue Foster introduced her as having a BA Degree, have worked in Headspace, having been involved in the Australia and NZ Rural Health Symposium. The Black Dog Institute quotes that one in five(20%) of Australians aged 16 to 85 years experience a mental health illness in any one year. Almost half 45% of Australians will experience a mental illness in their lifetime. These are new alarming ABS Australian Bureau of Statistics 2009 figures from a National Survey. Rotarians wore Hats and donated to the Rotary Foundation Mental Health Program.

There are plenty of opportunities for joint projects between Indian and Australian Clubs and Rotary Friendship Exchange is alive and well. It will be great to continue to develop the fellowship.

From Magdalina Mhando

Dear all at rotary club of Murray bridge

Hope that you are all fine, and I am fine too.it have a while since I wrote to you. Thanks for the updates about your club which I had been receiving and they are really nice.my wish for the club is to see it progressing well and I can see it on going well as it is. I really enjoy reading the club bulletins and I get new experiences through your club.

As I have told you that I would be informing you about my progress to university.first am now at the City of Dar es salaam where the university is and on 26 I will be arriving at the university to start my first term.
Am so happy to get the chance at this university to persu my first degree.but all this could not be successful without your support from primary to high School.
As for the fees I have got 50% of the government loan and the rest my family have to support me.
All in all I am ready to take new challenges of life here as the weather in this city is too hot which is different from Arusha where it's too cold.
I hope I will come with it.and more challenges are there for me.
Thanks alot and I miss you all hope to hear from you soon
          From your beloved
                    Lina
