Rotary Meeting 3384 Time: Nov 24, 2020 06:30 PM Adelaide
Vivonne Bay Kangaroo Island is Talia Freak's Office. She told us by Zoom how she achieved this feat and what a story she had to tell. She is a Rotarian Alumini and she credited Rotary with setting her off on her life's adventure. Rotarian Lesley Murray chaired the meeting after her recent travel to Kangaroo Island and catching up. Talia won a Rotary Short Term Youth Exchange to New Zealand in 2011 as a student at Unity College in Murray Bridge. She exchanged with a NZ family in Hamilton who had migrated to NZ from Zimbabwe several years earlier. Tanya Mhlanga her exchangee came to Talia's home farm in Coomandook. Lesley taught at Coomandook Area School with Rotarian Jim Cundy. Talia followed this up with attending RYPEN Rotary's Youth Program of Enrichment. This foundation led her to visit Cambodia in a school exchange and she became facinated with learning about different cultures and travell. After year 12 she studied at University gaining a Degree in Sport Recreation Management which included Event Management and Outdoor Recreation. Her experiences after graduation included going to Nepal with her family ( which was her Favourite Trip), 2017 Summer Camp in Pensylvannia USA as a rock climbing instructor, 6 weeks in South America, Equador, Peru and Bolivia. In 2018 she went to China before heading back to the US Summer Camp then back to Australia where she landed a job in Event Management for the Tour Down Under. In 2019 she took girls out hiking around Adelaide as part of Adventure Adelaide then went to Europe on a working holiday. visiting Germany, Netherlands, France, Italy and won a Event Management job in London. In 2020 she now works as a Tour Guide with Little Sahara Adventure Centre in beautiful Vivonne Bay one of my favourite places. She has a lot of fun enjoying the wildlife and any chance she can get to explore the amazing landscapes of KI. She takes Kayaking trips, buggy tours wildlife and nature trips. What a journey so far and all because Rotary took an interest in her back in Year 10. Rotarian Jenny Phillips was her mentor for the NZ exchange back then and has also watched her progress since.
