Dr Gill Hicks AM MBE was the guest speaker at the Murray Bridge Town Hall yesterday. She was interviewed by Librarian Tim Low one to one in front of a live audience. She is a peace advocate, author, musician and artist. She grew up in Glenelg Adelaide and moved to London in 1991 to work for architectural magazine Blueprint. As fate would have it she was the last living casualty rescued from one of three Underground trains attacked by terrorists in the 2007 London Bombings. Both her legs were amputated bellow the knee, she lost 80% of her blood and was not expected to live. Her life experiences and what she has experienced since left the audience spellbound. Lasting thoughts include; connection with strangers, the homeless in London, sense of community, the power of positive thinking, excitement to be alive, going forward with change, the need to fall to learn how to get up, normal is never the same, learning to trust yourself, everything we need we already have, we are the only species who know we will have an end, and a sense of connection with home. ALL very powerful and deep messages with relevance to us all.

End Polio Now
In 1985 Rotary launched PolioPlus to immunize every child in the world against polio. Working with our partners and members of the global health community, together we will end polio.
Through the science of vaccines, Rotary & partners have saved nearly 19 million children from becoming paralyzed by polio. Learn more about our work to End Polio Now and how you can get involved: https://on.rotary.org/3eqtrrr
Rotary has been working to eradicate polio for more than 35 years, and we’ve made incredible progress in the fight to rid the world of it forever.
It’s crucial to eradicate polio from the last two countries where it remains endemic and to keep other countries polio-free.
If all eradication efforts stopped today, within 10 years, polio could paralyze as many as 200,000 children each year.
What is polio?
Polio, or poliomyelitis, is a paralyzing and potentially deadly infectious disease that most commonly affects children under the age of 5. The virus spreads from person to person, typically through contaminated water. It can then attack the nervous system.
