Meeting Report 3331

President Lesley presided with the chair for the evening being Sam Cozens.
Our speakers for the evening were the entrants in the national IAWARDS which are coordinated by the Australian Information Industry Association.
The program has been offered at the MBHS as an after school activity for the last five years.
IT Teacher at the Murray Bridge High School, Lachlan Dwyer introduced the students and allowed them to present their "pitch".
Students Thomas, Jalal, Riley & Logan each outlined portions of the program.
The boys identified a need in the community which is currently not being met. A lack of first aid training and points of contact for younger people was the genesis for their "App" named "Emergency Kid".
After researching apps which are similar, they found the needs of Australian young people were not being met.
Designing, coding, itentifying language which is appropriate and also protecting intelectual property are all skills that will set these young people on a path in IT development.
Well done students
Winning the Adelaide competition automatically allowed them to compete at the nationals. Sadly they did not win but received a merit award placing them in the top 5%.

Let It Pour - Drought Relief

The Rotary Clubs of Australia Drought Appeal
We’re Fighting for our farmers.
Farmers are in crisis. Record-high heat and record-low rain mean their livestock is starving. Their crops are dying. Many farmers and their families are suffering in silence.

What an effort from our Club to gain exposure on the Channel 9 Today show. Thanks to the many Murray Bridge members who assisted and also to Warren, Bronwyn & Wendy from Mobilong. President Liz & Anna also attended.
The Rotary Clubs of Australia have partnered with Channel 9, Great Northern Brewing Co and the Bendigo Bank to raise funds and in kind donations for the drought affected communities.  The campaign was launched 21 October in Murray Bridge being the regional centre for the drought declared Murray Mallee.
Members of the Rotary Clubs of Murray Bridge and Mobilong joined the Channel 9 Today team at the Swanport Hotel at 4.30am along with some 50 plus community members including local MP Adrian Pederick and our own DG Tim Klar. School children, farmers and community businesses provided insight into the impact of the drought, DG Tim gave voice to Rotary’s role as a service organisation and the local clubs provided a BBQ breakfast.
The campaign will continue to be showcased on the Today Show throughout this week from a range of communities across Eastern Australia.

Ride Like A Girl

Wallis Theatre complex at Mount Barker was the venue for the Rotary End Polio Now movie fundraiser last Friday evening.
Clubs from Group 3 along with friends gathered at 6pm to enjoy pre movie drinks and nibbles. Approximately 100 people enjoyed the show.
The movie told the story of Michelle Payne and has been favourably reviewed by many critics.
During the evening a raffle was conducted and Murray Bridge members were among the many winners.

Magdalina's (Lina) Recent Letter

Dear all at rotary club of Murray Bridge

Hope that you are all fine, and I am fine too. It have a while since I wrote to you. Thanks for the updates about your club which I had been receiving and they are really nice.my wish for the club is to see it progressing well and I can see it on going well as it is. I really enjoy reading the club bulletins and I get new experiences through your club.

As I have told you that I would be informing you about my progress to university.first am now at the City of Dar es salaam where the university is and on 26 I will be arriving at the university to start my first term.
Am so happy to get the chance at this university to persu my first degree.but all this could not be successful without your support from primary to high School.
As for the fees I have got 50% of the government loan and the rest my family have to support me.
All in all I am ready to take new challenges of life here as the weather in this city is too hot which is different from Arusha where it's too cold.
I hope I will come with it.and more challenges are there for me.
Thanks alot and I miss you all hope to hear from you soon
          From your beloved

Ambrose A Big Hit

The Rotary Club of Murray Bridge held a 2 person Ambrose Golf Tournament at the Murray Bridge Golf Club on Thursday 17th October. The main aim was to raise funds for “Lift the Lid” mental health research through Australian Rotary Health.  The golf event was also about promoting the game of golf, the camaraderie of playing the game with one’s mates, walking or riding around the golf course, enjoying the fresh air and having some fun.  All of which assists one’s mental health.
A total of 42 golfers from 11 Golf Clubs participated in the event, with a shotgun start at 12.30pm.  Some were Rotarians, many were not.  Many of the competitors had never played at the Murray Bridge Golf Club, so, in effect, we were promoting the Golf Club too.

The Rotary Club thanks its sponsors for the Tournament, Drakes Supermarket Murray Bridge, Dynacast Golf Group, Aussie Apricots and the Rural City of Murray Bridge.
At the end of the day’s play, the Rotary Club provided a bbq meal for the players.  From the survey conducted at the end of the day’s play, the majority of the players said that they enjoyed the fellowship of their playing partners and the quality of the golf course.  Many players indicated that they would be keen to return next year and play in the event again.
Winners for the Tournament were Rotarian Malcolm Blight and Lloyd Norrish, with runners-up, Peter Phillips and Grant Penrhyn.
