     PRESIDENT'S ROUND UP 12th MARCH

I believe we as a Rotary Club are doing very well by promoting our organisation, and this was shown again with such a great night with our promotion of “The Heart of the Nation” by Greg Page. To both Daryl and Jim for organising such a wonderful night on behalf of the club thank you to you both. With so many guests I believe we were able to make people aware of both the AED’s and what Rotary does so well in our community, so well done to all. It was also pleasing to see our DG Paul, PDG Jeff and Area Governor Shiralee attend this night.
I would like you to support our packing of the Mongolian playground container on the 29th of March and I am sure Jack will take any assistance offered and keep listening to 5mu around 7.10am for Jack’s interview.
On Thursday we had some activity at the Monarto Safari Park starting to fire proof some of their buildings, thanks to Rob Walters for making this happen.
Please don’t forget we have a busy week-end this week so pleases be prepared to assist either Citroen car club or the Multi-Cultural day .
Look forward to seeing you all on Tuesday night.

TIME MATTERS

TIME MATTERS in Cardiac Arrest!!!! This was the main message delivered by former Yellow Wiggle Greg Page to Rotarians from over six clubs including the District Governor, Past DG and Area Governor who attended the Rotary Clubs of Murray Bridge and Mobilong joint meeting at the Murray Bridge RSL on Tuesday. Greg spoke from experience as a survivor of Cardiac arrest on the importance of placement of mobile AED (Automated External Defibrillation) units where they were readily accessible with registration making them traceable if stolen and hefty fines in place if they are stolen. Greg was highly fit, 48 years of age, had no history of heart disease that he was aware of, and at the end of a Wiggles stage performance at Castlehill RSL when it happened. Patients rely heavily on bystanders to start the process, call an ambulance, commence CPR and defibillate using n AED. Si mplypush the button on the AED device when it arrives and follow the prompts till help arrives. The AED empowers the community to save lives. Batteries need to be replaced in this model every 4 years. Heart of the Nation is another project supported by the Rotary Club of Murray Bridge. John Scarvelis

Ugandan Orphanage

Dear Rotary,
Last year I spent time in Ruhija, South-West Uganda. There I met a woman called Happy, who is Vice-Chairwoman of the local community and Director of an Orphanage School, which provides food and accommodation for all its students. I also spent time with the Batwa people, who live on the outskirts of Ruhija after being forcibly removed from the nearby forest when it was turned into a national park 30 or so years ago. For my birthday this year (today), I am doing a fundraiser for the orphanage and the Batwa people. Having communicated with Happy, the funds for the orphanage would go towards school supplies, food, clothes, and mattresses. When there I was struck that 3 kids needed to share the same bed, on hard metal frames with mattresses that were almost completely fallen apart. We shared lunch together, and the 30 or 40 children shared between them what would be lunch for one or two people in Australia. I have never met children so eager to learn, but quality food and sleep are important for learning so helping with this would help the children’s education.

Press Release

Murraylands Yuntu-Walun Multicultural Festival

Sunday 19th March 2023 11am till 3.30pm Pine Park Murray Bridge
Diverse cultures of the Murraylands coming together in a celebration
The Murraylands Multicultural Network was formed in 2005 in a partnership between the Australian Migrant Resource Centre and the Rotary Club of Murray Bridge. It was launched by Huei Van Le at the Rotary Murraylands Multicultural Festival at Sturt Reserve in 2006 after great support from the Rural City of Murray Bridge, the Mobilong Rotary Club and Murray Bridge businesses. Its on again as part of mad March this time at Pine Park under the pines. It’s a free Family event featuring children’s activities, cultural food, song and dance with over 12 performances during the day. This includes a Ngarrindjeri welcome and performance, Ukrainian Dancers, the fabulous Australian Navy Band will rock your socks at about 2.40, Mickster the Trickster Magical show, Nigerian Singers, Philipino Singing and traditional dance, Ode to Joy traditional Chinese group featuring an Erhu instrumental performance, Italian opera, Rwandan Dance Group, Arabesque Belly Dance, plus Farmer Darcy farm animals, Animal Anonymous displaying Australian native animals, Boandik Yalunwing Weavers and crafts, Ukarainian Arts and crafts, Maori Arts and crafts, the Black Dog Institute stall for Mental Health, Zimbawean African Crafts, Philipino Arts and crafts.
Cultural foods will also be available, a special Maori Hangi can be ordered in advance for $20 by contacting Dawn Mathews on 0434545931, Sri Lankan, Greek, French Delights, Italian sweets, Tawainese Waffles, Stellars Tucker Van and coffee. Some seating is available, bring your own and settle in for the day to enjoy the performances and fun. We hope this brings all the community together after some tough times, enabling us to go forward with confidence and enthusiasm with new jobs on the horizon. Please join us at this new venue.

Doncha love what people do for Rotary?

Y’know Warren puts his hand up for a container and his supplier gives him a huge discount, AND has it accredited at the same time because it’s for Rotary, and Warren picks it up and delivers.
Then a bloke puts his hand up and says he will pay for the container, because it is for Rotary and the Mongolian kids “on the heap”.
Then a bloke who was staying with us for a few days put his hand in his pocket and dragged out $200 to spend on the kids and add to the container.
Then the Salvos offered their shop and a shed as a drop off point for stuff for the kids because it is for Rotary.
Then a bloke (Stewart Heard) comes out of the woodwork when he heard (sorry couldn’t resist it) about the project and offers 7 lockers (on Miriam’s list), his dad delivers them to the Men’s Shed, who have kindly offered to cut them in half and make good so that we can send 14 small lockers for the kids, and they will do this for nothing because it is for Rotary and “the kids”. The aforementioned dad then said he will pick them up when ready and deliver to the “Donations In Kind” Rotary Shed.
Then a lady heard about what we are doing and brought around 5 garbags full of blankets pillows and clothing, not all suitable for “the kids” (not on the list), but I’m sure you get the drift.
If that don’t warm the cockles I dunno wot will!! Brilliant.
cheers jakal

MBHS Shelter Box Update

Dear Rotarian

I hope you and your family are safe and well.

It has been quite a month. Events in Türkiye and Syria have shocked the world and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine has just passed its one-year anniversary.

I have been blown away by the instant generosity of our supporters and would like to give my sincere thanks to all those that have donated. I'd also like to make a special mention of the many Rotary Clubs that have mobilised to raise and donate much-needed funds. They have been amazing!

Shelter remains the priority for people across Türkiye and Syria. At least two million people have lost their homes in Türkiye, and more than 80,000 people in Syria have been displaced – many not for the first time. Hundreds of thousands of people are without adequate shelter, including many in harder-to-reach rural areas. We are working hard to change this.

ShelterBox has an emergency fundraising appeal to help people affected by the earthquakes and other disasters around the world, but here are plenty of other ways you can show your solidarity with those affected by disaster and conflict. There are details below, including an exciting trekking opportunity in America's legendary Yosemite National Park!

This month's quote comes from Albert Schweitzer, "The first step in the evolution of ethics is a sense of solidarity with other human beings."

Thanks for being part of the team. Stay safe.

CEO ShelterBox Australia
