Meeting Report 3390

Scams were the topic of discussion this week at Rotary led by Rotarian Sherida Campbell Manager of Bank SA in Murray Bridge with Donna Sullivan and Leoni Collins two of her staff. $634 million was lost in 2019 thru scams and average of $7,224 per customer a very significant amount. The proceeds unfortunately are used to fund organised crime within Australia and internationally. Bank SA policy aims at building resiliance and financial stability in the community. 56 % of scams usually start by phone with about 40% online. The Rotarians were enlightened with a series of case studies based on real life senarios.

Australia Day Awards

This morning we were up bright & early for the annual Australia Day breakfast, this year at the Wharf precinct. Was a lovely setting, be it a bit cool & overcast.
Congratulations to all award recipients, but in particular former Mobilong member Wendy Gaborit for receiving an OAM (Service to the Community of the MB region), Murray Bridge Rotary member John Scarvelis who received the Murray Bridge Citizen of the Year award & Mobilong partner, Maren Yakas on becoming an Australian citizen.

Rural City of Murray Bridge chief executive officer Michael Segdman said John was an exceptional community contributor who has led many innovative programs and community initiatives in Murray Bridge.

"John joined the Rotary Club of Murray Bridge in 1985 and served as its president in 2006/2007 along with a number of other roles in over 35 years of community service," he said

Recently, John has held significant roles with the Murraylands Multicultural Network and has been a driving force for many programs and events including the Murraylands Multicultural Festival.

"John's lists of contribution does not end there, as he has been an active contributor to many other sporting clubs and community organisations through the district," Mr Sedgman said

"He's been an amazing community contributor for decades, working to make the region a more inclusive and caring one by consistently working to break down cultural barriers."

Accepting the award, Mr Scarvelis acknowledged Ngarrindjeri Elders past and present.

"We are all part of the story, the theme of Australia Day; reflect, respect and celebrate requires accurate and detailed acknowledgement of history, achievements and understanding," he said.

"It requires high priority for all of the members of our community to work together, learn from each other, and respect our individual and community history.

These are the New Citizens that took the oath at the Australia Day ceremony in the Rural City of Murray Murray Bridge. Welcome. A very special day for them. Mayor Brenton Lewis does a great job in making them feel comfortable and special.
From John
Feeling thankful that some of my family particularly my grandsons were able to attend the Australia Day Awards at Sturt Reserve in Murray Bridge this morning. Thanks also to the Rotary Club of Murray Bridge who have provided the climate for me to grow surrounded by a network of motivated Rotarian colleagues and the Murraylands Multicultural Network under the auspices of the Australian Migrant Resource Centre with whom new settlers are able to live, work and play in this city in a lifestyle they can enjoy and become good Australians. Family is a key pillar to networking and citizenship. Special thanks to Mayor Brenton Lewis and his team from the Rural City of Murray Bridge for their support.

Rotary Jubilee Park

The Rotary Club of Mobilong along with the Rotary Club of Murray Bridge celebrated the official opening of 2 projects last night highlighting what can be achieved with partnerships.
Firstly the Revegetation of the local park located on the corner of Swanport and Long Island Roads.. With the financial support from a grant made available by Federal Member of Barker Tony Pasin, Rotary District grant , club funds and the work completed by the Rural City of Murray Bridge
Then in a partnership with the Rotary Club of Murray Bridge and with communuty consultation the Rural City of Murray Bridge approved the renaming of the park to Rotary Jubilee Park in recognition of numerous community activities undertaken by the 2 Rotary Clubs in the town . Wonderful recognition in the 100th year of Rotary in Australia

Opening of the Regional Rowing Club of Murray Bridge

So............the afternoon faded into night, ribbons were cut, dignitaries spoke and curtains pulled to reveal the newest infrastructures along the Sturt Reserve Precinct.
There is an enthusiastic energy in Murray Bridge, the new Regional Rowing Club, the Cods Memorial (if you don't know the story, go have a look!) all in the shadow of the exciting (trust me it's exciting! I've had the tour 😉 ) Bridgeport Hotel development led by an equally enthusiastic and incredibly competent Mary-Lou Corcoran.
Yes, there certainly was a palpable energy and excitment amongst the guests at the opening and I am very honoured to be given the privilege of capturing the evening.........Thank you to the amazing events team at
Rural City of Murray Bridge
Matt Miles
and congratulations to all the stakeholders and drivers of the project that have brought the fabulous Murray Bridge Regional Rowing Club to fruition. And the Cods Memorial? It's stunning - no other words............just stunning!!!
