PRESIDENTS ROUND UP 18th September

I received correspondence from PDG Jeff congratulating our Club on achieving a Club Citation for 2021-22 under Past President Sue’s leadership. This will be presented by PDG Jeff in the coming months. In the coming days you will receive an email asking you to vote yes/no on the Rationalisation Pilot Scheme, and the club requires a 2/3 majority for the vote. Last week I attended the Area Presidents meeting at Mt Barker and a couple of items that we might like to be involved with. On 24/25th September the Stirling club is holding their Small Acreage Field Day at the Echunga oval, and should you be interested I have four one day passes available. Speaking with Bob England ( Mobilong), they are looking at having an eight-ball night and Bob has asked if we as a club would like to join them. On reading Community minutes, I pleased that the club is continuing the support at the Monarto Safari Park along with many new ideas coming, so please take the opportunity to read these minutes. On the 24th of October is World Polio Day and perhaps we as a club could have some event that would enable us to tell the Murraylands of the Rotary success of eliminating Polio. The RALY committee is currently having difficulties filling positions for some of the Rotary youth programmes, but I feel this is a short term issue. PP Sue is currntly looking into an initiative young women called “Share the Dignity” and I am sure PP Sue will enlighten the club when further details become available. I know I mentioned this last week, but please think of five people outside of Rotary who may have time to be involved in Rotary. As I have mentioned before we are aiming to have an information night to provide these people with an insight of what WE do as a TEAM of dedicated volunteers. I would like you to supply an address and contact number, if possible, for future follow up. See you all on Tuesday

ROTARY INTERNATIONAL

The Rotary Foundation has raised more than $15 million in relief contributions to aid Ukrainians affected by the war. And Rotary members worldwide have jumped to help in relief efforts as well— donating over $15 million in aid, gathering and sending critical medical supplies, repurposing logistics networks to source housing, and much more.

I have on behalf of Rotary District 9510 expressed condolences on the sad news that Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II passed away. The Queen demonstrated extraordinary dedication and commitment to duty throughout her 70-year Reign and did so with a graceful strength and admirable determination.

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II demonstrated – “Service above Self”, making that commitment on her twenty first birthday.

In 2013 Rotary International recognised Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II with the prestigious Rotary International Award of Honour.

I am sure you share with me in recognising her passing and our expression of sympathy to His Majesty King Charles III and the other members of the Royal Family.

The Prime Minister has announced that the National Day of Mourning will be observed on Thursday 22 September with a Public Holiday. There are no formal requirements to suspend events on the National Day of Mourning.

Any decision to suspend an event is that of the event organiser. There are a number of clubs within our district that meet on Thursday.

As District Governor, I will not undertake any club visits or attend events on that day of the National Day of Mourning.

However, the decision to suspend Rotary meetings and events, will be vested with those respective club leaders and event organisers as per the Commonwealth Government declaration.

Among the most frequently invoked words shared over the past few days has been “duty”, “steadfast”, “wise” and “constant”, but mention has also been made of her sense of humour, and of her life and role as a mother and grandmother as well as a monarch.

As Rotarians, we identify with these qualities, remembering the Four Way Test – while keeping our respective families close to heart.

May she rest in eternal peace.

Regards
Paul Thomas AM
District Governor 2022-2023

Object of Rotary

The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

  • FIRST: The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;
  • SECOND: High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity to serve society;
  • THIRD: The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian’s personal, business, and community life;
  • FOURTH: The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

End Polio Now

In 1985 Rotary launched PolioPlus to immunize every child in the world against polio. Working with our partners and members of the global health community, together we will end polio.

Through the science of vaccines, Rotary & partners have saved nearly 19 million children from becoming paralyzed by polio. Learn more about our work to End Polio Now and how you can get involved: https://on.rotary.org/3eqtrrr

Rotary has been working to eradicate polio for more than 35 years, and we’ve made incredible progress in the fight to rid the world of it forever.

As a founding partner of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, we've helped to reduced polio cases by more than 99.9 percent.

It’s crucial to eradicate polio from the last two countries where it remains endemic and to keep other countries polio-free.

If all eradication efforts stopped today, within 10 years, polio could paralyze as many as 200,000 children each year.

What is polio?

Polio, or poliomyelitis, is a paralyzing and potentially deadly infectious disease that most commonly affects children under the age of 5. The virus spreads from person to person, typically through contaminated water. It can then attack the nervous system.
