I would like to thank all the Rotary family on behalf of June who have sent their well wishes for her during her operation for which June was extremely appreciative of these calls. As I pointed out to her, she now has one less toenail to cut.
At last weeks Board we approved to purchase five Shelter Boxes at $1000 each and we can only hope that we see fewer disasters and conflicts.
What I did forget to mention last week regarding the Swap Meet was that if any member has any thoughts of how to make this event more efficient please let me know. I would also like to ask members who would be willing to give me some support leading up to the event as it seems to take much more time organising than it has in the past.
As I have said beforehand, March is very busy, and I would ask all members to check their diaries and be prepared to help.
This is just a few dates that we have listed:
March 5th- Little athletics ( Sam Cozens )
7th- Heart of the Nation ( Jim Cundy ) RSL
9th- Monarto Zoo ( Rob Walters )
18th- Citroen rally ( Jim Cundy )
19th- Multicultural Yallum-Walum festival ( John Scarvelis)
Also be aware the Rotary Art Show starts on the 1st April. So, as you can see, we have a busy schedule ahead of us.
See you all Tuesday evening for what will be a good night with an interesting guest speaker.
GETTING MONGOLIAN CHILDREN OFF “THE HEAP”
Rotarians Jack and Jill Reddin gave a brief rundown on how a Canadian couple, the Veloos, created a Foundation to provide a kindergarten/early learning/child minding facility where Mongolian parents could leave their 5 yo and under children whilst they scavenged on “the heap”, the huge rubbish dump of the capital Ulaanbaatar.
Supported by photos, a power point, and Adrian Zarantonello (he had just returned to Australia having worked in a copper mine with Reddin’s son Troy, and Chelvon Veloo in Mongolia for the last 11 years) who provided some local knowledge/updates about Mongolia, the Reddins outlined why they came back fired up to send a container of playgrounds and other equipment that the Veloo Foundation could use to support over 500 children, through Rotary.
They outlined why the total project will cost around $15,000 AUD and revealed that it was now fully funded, with both local Rotary Clubs contribution of $5,000 AUD each being the substantive contributors. It is expected that the container will be packed and sent off by the end of March.

Environment Forum
For many years Clubs in our District have supported their communities by undertaking environmental projects, well before Rotary added the Environment as a seventh Area of Focus. Our Forum planned for 11 March will have many facets, and will be of interest to all Rotarians. What we have scheduled is
Keynote address by Past RI President Ian Riseley (and current International Chair of the Rotary Foundation). A long term advocate for the environment, who challenged us in 2017/18 to plant 1.2 million trees, and easily surpassed his target. Ian will inform us what is happening around the Rotary world of an environmental nature, and even more importantly how we can use Foundation funding towards our environmental projects. Ian is an engaging speaker, and undoubtedly the best qualified person to share these messages.
A Calperum update. For over two decades Clubs in our District have been involved with Calperum Station (just out of Renmark) in many different ways. In the last couple of months the River Murray waters have reached higher than any of us have ever seen, but fortunately the damage was less than we anticipated. Julie Robertson, Operations Manager at Calperum, will provide us with an update on the floods, tasks that need to be done soon, plus their strategic plans for the future.
Soap Box spots. Five short presentations will highlight the breadth of environmental projects happening in the District, and how your club could become more involved. You will learn how to engage with schools, local councils, and even influence a state government to enact legislation.
Obviously there will be some time to answer questions during the formal part of the Forum, or over refreshments to follow.
We have sufficient space in the auditorium for several representatives from each club, so we encourage every Club to send at least two participants. Book via TryBooking Ref https://www.trybooking.com/events/landing/1002792 Queries can be directed to myself on will4444sa@gmail.com, or 0414 645402 (leave a message if the call is not answered).

Music For Dementia Grant
During this week Roger Wickes and myself had the pleasure of accepting a “cheque” from the Flinders University Rural and Remote Health for NT and SA.
The attached photo records the presentation of the “cheque”.
Local representatives for the Flinders University, Di Bolton (left of photo) and Naomi Thomas (photo centre) presented the “cheque”.
“Our local Rotary Club of Murray Bridge, has used the project “Music for Dementia” under the guidance of Director Lyn Sickerdick, to seek out people in our community who are effected by the onset of dementia. This Project has been successful in finding recipients for the specially designed headsets with an inbuilt selection of music. Reports of how well this initiative has improved the well being of many who have used this music therapy, has led to a request for Rotarian Roger Wickes to seek further funds for this Project through Flinders University. A grant of $2000.00 is the outcome, and this will be used to extend the “Music for Dementia” service to many more deserving recipients.”
