David Altmann and Simon Sickerdick reported to the Rotary Club of Murray Bridge on their trip to Timor Leste (East Timor) to work with villagers on Rotary Water and Sanitation Projects They and Lynn Sickerdick along with members from Stirling and Mt Barker Clubs went for 7 days to Aileu in the centra highlands, to three schools in Talitu which have 568 students started in 2018, Berkati Village project was started in 2008-10, Fatuk-Hun School and Ornai School which has 56 Students.
They worked in partnership with the two Rotary Clubs of Dili. The projects included gravity fed and electric pump water systems creek sourced with filter tanks, holding tanks, hand washing stations, and toilets. Some 1500 people benefited from the project. East Timor is a close neighbour to Australia which in the 16th Century was a Portuguese colony and then occupied by the Indonesians between 1974 till 1998. The 1991 Dili Massacre was a turning point for the independence cause and Timor Leste is now a Soverign State after a UN sponsored agreement between Indonesia and Portugal in 1998. The project was funded by Rotary International District 9520 Grant and the three Rotary Clubs.
Murraylands Mutlicultural Network
The Murraylands Multicultural Network Chair John Scarvelis welcomed 40 or so who came to the Annual General Meeting at the Australian Migrant Resource Centre in Murray Bridge on Friday evening. Included were Mayor Brenton Lewis, Ms Thuy Phang Member of the SA Multicultural Affairs Commission, Lailaine Reading Thomas Foods, Lesley Murray President Rotary Club of Murray Bridge, Borong Xu President of the Chinese Community Association Murraylands, Merilyn Schultz Soroptomists, Tricia Rossiter SAPOL, Jagtar Singh Punjabi leader, Dawn Mathews Maori Community leader, Joy Goodridge Philipino Community, Heather Muirehead AMRC, Bao Luo CCAM leader and Brian Rainey MMN Treasurer. He said it's been a milestone year following the Thomas Foods fire but a year of rebuilding and forward planning with actions to build a better future for living in the Murraylands. The MMN takes a key role in listening and representing as a voice of the communities and individuals including communities at different stages of development. It is also the link between the "New Neighbours" and the mainstream community.
