MEETING REPORT

Rotarian Ron Jericho who has been a member of the Rotary Club of Murray Bridge for 43 years was our guest speaker on Tuesday evening's dinner Meeting. Kevin Prosser who has also known Ron for a very long time and served with him in JC's as youngsters introduced him as a veteran of the Club. He has certainly been very active in all that time and has made a valuable Rotary contribution. Ron reminisced about his Earth Moving business early days before and after the 1956 flood, his JC's involvement, learning the piano and playing at the Jervois Dances with the River Rockets and the High Tones and also played the organ at the Lutheran Church. He married Sabina in 1965. In Rotary he became President in 1988/89, has made valuable contributions as Treasurer, important contributions in Rotary Exchanges, the Rotary Murray Bridge Art Show and is a Rotary Paul Harris Fellow. He started the Murray Computer Centre a computer and accounting business in Murray Bridge. He has been involved with the Murray Bridge Singers and Players and has made trips with Sabina to Toronto, Texas, Washington State, New Guinea, and South Africa.

 Premier's Community Service Awards

Murray Bridge did very well at the Premier's Community Service Awards held yesterday at the Glenelg Golf Club in Adelaide. South Australian Premier Stephen Marshall and Minister Stephen Patterson made the presentations. The combined service clubs of Murray Bridge, seven clubs in total, won the Team Award with the project New Beginnings for Homeless Youth. This was made up of the Rotary Club of Murray Bridge, Rotary Club of Mobilong, Soroptomist International of Murray Bridge, Murray Bridge City Lions, Kiwanis and Mobilong Innerwheel. This partnership enabled the purchase of items to fit out four specifically built units for the homeless youth project known as Studio Purpose. Studio Purpose has fully renovated two Housing SA maisonettes into four seperate units and has involved Habitat for Humanity, local tradespersons, the Rural City of Murray Bridge and ac Care. and aims to help build a future for vulnerable youth. ac Care will be providing individual professional support services for the young people who may be at risk. Receiving the Award from Minister Patterson are Rotary Club of Murray Bridge President Sue Foster, Soroptomist Peggy Bennett and Rotary Club of Mobilong President Browyn Heard. Other Awards featuring Murray Bridge were the Social Inclusion Award won by the Rotary Club of Mobilong for Local Support For Foodbank, The Harry Tillyer Schools Community Service Award won by Murray Bridge High School-Pay it Forward Coffee Project, The Community Education Award won by Soroptimist International Murray Bridge with Magic in Science and the Heidi Taylor Community Service Award Special Mention won by Rebecca Aloisi from the Rotary Club of Mobilong. The Murray Bridge Community is a caring community. There were 43 projects submitted from around South Australia and many more would have been worthy if submitted.

HARRY TILLYER AWARD WON BY MURRAY BRIDGE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

Murray Bridge High School won the Harry Tillyer Award at the Premier's Community Service Awards yesterday at the Glenelg Golf Club in Adelaide. Premier Stephen Marshall congratulated the students Year 11 Mia Parker and Year 12 Rachael Blaschek with Assistant Principal Murray Bridge Rotarian Roxanne Rowland. The Vet hospitality students supported the community through their Pay it forward Coffees Project to contribute to the wellbeing of the school's local community and selection of kitchen equipment for the four studio apartments within the AC Care Studio Purpose Project for at risk homeless youth aged 15 to 25 in Murray Bridge. Students made coffees and hot chocolates for staff and students in return for a gold coin donation and also presented 2 lunches for staff, parents and peers as part of their Vet assessments. The project taught leadership and life skills as well as good citizenship in a difficult covid environment. The model could be used globally to support young people at risk, a useful discussion starter, and for developing understanding of other peoples circumstances.

  • FOURTH: The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

End Polio Now

In 1985 Rotary launched PolioPlus to immunize every child in the world against polio. Working with our partners and members of the global health community, together we will end polio.

Through the science of vaccines, Rotary & partners have saved nearly 19 million children from becoming paralyzed by polio. Learn more about our work to End Polio Now and how you can get involved: https://on.rotary.org/3eqtrrr

Rotary has been working to eradicate polio for more than 35 years, and we’ve made incredible progress in the fight to rid the world of it forever.

As a founding partner of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, we've helped to reduced polio cases by more than 99.9 percent.

It’s crucial to eradicate polio from the last two countries where it remains endemic and to keep other countries polio-free.

If all eradication efforts stopped today, within 10 years, polio could paralyze as many as 200,000 children each year.

What is polio?

Polio, or poliomyelitis, is a paralyzing and potentially deadly infectious disease that most commonly affects children under the age of 5. The virus spreads from person to person, typically through contaminated water. It can then attack the nervous system.
