Last week’s meeting the individual Committees were deep in conversation.  All Committees finished their meetings early as we wind down with Christmas coming, that is except the Community Committee who are busy as usual.  The pictures of Mrs Edward’s grave show what a wonderful job Jim’s team of helpers have done.  It is good to see important monuments receive a clean up.

On Wednesday John Whimpress and I were presented with a $3,000 cheque by Flinders University to be used towards the Aged Care Expo next year. John has started some initial planning for this event.

Another event being planned and one you should put in your diary, is our Rotary Information Evening. This is planned for Tuesday, January 28, 2025.  If you know of anyone who is interested in what Rotary does and maybe wishes to join our Club please invite them to come along.

Before that we have Kim Vanstone and Tyler Langbridge talking about Operation Flinders this coming meeting and the following week Katherine Thiele and Clay Burgess talking about their RYLA experience.  Both these meetings are good ones to invite guests to.  Just remember to let Jacquie Best know.

A reminder that our AGM is on December 3rd.  This meeting is a closed meeting and guests should not be invited to attend.

Thought for the week:  Let us keep our hearts strong, enthusiasm fresh, hope high.  As long as we keep imbued with this spirit, Rotary can never die.” - Paul Harris.

Murray Bridge Remembrance Day 2024

Many people took the opportunity to attend a Remembrance Day Service conducted at the Murray Bridge War Memorial Sturt Reserve on Monday 11th November.

Elizabeth and I had the privilege of representing our Rotary Club at the service, and our Remembrance Wreath was laid as part of the Ceremony.

We were particularly impressed with the address given by The Reverend Paul Calnan, from the Murray Bridge Lutheran Church, and it is with his permission I share several paragraphs with you.

Murray Bridge Remembrance Day Address, November 11, 2024

“Good morning.

Today we gather here as a community to remember, and to give thanks for the countless Australians who have served our nation in times of war and conflict. On this Remembrance Day, we pause to acknowledge their courage, their sacrifices, and the freedoms they have secured for us. Standing here today, we are reminded that the lives we live in peace were bought at a great price. Their legacy and bravery are forever woven into the very fabric of our nation.

At the eleventh hour on the eleventh day of the eleventh month, we observe a moment of silence—a silence that speaks volumes. This silence honours the lives of those lost, the wounds borne by veterans, and the heartache of families who lost loved ones. It is a silence filled with gratitude, remembrance, and a commitment to carry forward the values for which they fought.

On this day, we also recognize that Remembrance Day is a time of reconciliation—a time to remember that we are part of a global community, and that the pain of war is shared across borders and generations. Conflict and war have touched every corner of the world, and many nations join us in observing this day of remembrance. As Australians, we are grateful for the alliances and friendships that have been forged through shared sacrifice. Today, we stand together not only as a nation but as part of a global community that longs for peace.”

I thank Paul for sharing these insightful thoughts with us, and for those who would like to read the whole address, I am circulating a complete copy via ClubRunner.

Elizabeth and Sam Cozens.

Mrs Edwards Grave

Mrs Edwards grave has been given a little bit of TLC. Rotarians, after negotiating with Council began the task of returning the gravesite to its former splendour.
Mary Ann Edwards and her husband George were the first European settlers in Murray Bridge and played a large role in the development of the region.

Calperum Report

The year 6 students from Murraylands Primary Schools who participated in this year's Rotary Club of Murray Bridge Calperum Environmental Camp reported to the Rotarians, watched by their families, on their experience. This is part of the Club's Rotary Assisting Local Youth program and in the second year of this new format. The Camp ran from Monday till Thursday in the first week of the recent school holidays. It allows the students to make new friends, learn some new life skills and about the environment. Please check out our sponsors and support them as they are crucial to the event. Rotary runs programs for locals and internationally and is based on service to communities, peace and goodwill. Learn more about what we do on our facebook page and website. John Scarvelis

Reclaim The Night

Friday evening was an opportunity for Rotarians to be part of the Council sponsored "Reclaim The Night Event".
Rotarians provided a free BBQ for the small crowd who assembled to hear messages from our two local Polititians, Adrian Pederick and Tony Pasin who gave freely of their time.
Sadly the message did not get out to the community as the response was quite poor considering the important story being told.

Object of Rotary

The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

  • FIRST: The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;
  • SECOND: High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity to serve society;
  • THIRD: The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian’s personal, business, and community life;
  • FOURTH: The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.
