Well last Tuesday’s meeting was really great. The two Murray Bridge High School students, James Noah and Aliesha, who received our Bursary gave a performance, despite nerves,  which showed how talented they are.  Their brief talk about what they will do or have done with the Bursary money; outlining their immediate and ultimate goals showed their determination to have a future in the music industry.

We also had another special guest at our meeting, Thomas Kohler. Tom was an inbound Long Term Youth Exchange student 1988/89.  It was wonderful to see him catching up with our longer serving Rotarians and hearing about what he is doing now.  It is a great testament to the LTYE programme.

I helped sell calendars at Drakes on Wednesday. Jacquie will give a more detailed report but while I was there we sold quite a few.  It did give us an opportunity to have brief talks with people who asked what Rotary was all about.  One lady told me about her struggle to escape a domestic violence situation. She is winning slowly.

This brings me to remind you all about the Reclaim the Night event on Friday, November 1st at Edwards Square.  It begins at 5.00pm and there will be a free bbq, drinks, service stalls, guest speakers, music and much more.  Come along and support this event. We will have a stall promoting Rotary and our involvement in helping homeless youth and our fight against domestic violence.

Youth Exchange Visitor

Former Rotary Club of Murray Bridge Exchage Student Thomas Kohler visited the club on Tuesday evening. Thomas was from the Black Forest area in Germany and exchanged in 1988/89. He attended Murray Bridge High School in his year with us. The exchange he says was life changing for him. He was greatful for the encouragement and experiences he received in Murray Bridge. He is currently living in the Florida having lived in San Fransisco and works providing arts experiences. President Jenny Alexander-Walters presented Thomas with a Murray Bridge Rotary Flag and Pen. Safari Park Shelter

Rotary continues to develop the new Mallee native animals reserve at the Monarto Safari Park. Having completed the fencing (well almost) we have now begun the information shelter. This will be a place for visitors to sit whilst observing and hearing about native australian fauna. Rob Walters, Sam Cozens, Jim Cundy and Mark Smith (from ZOOSSA, not in photo) have erected the 7 posts that will support the structure.

Music Bursary Awardees 2024

The Rotary Club of Murray Bridge awardees for the Rotary Music Bursary 2024 Aleisha Spurling and James Noah Peterson from Murray Bridge High School entertained our members and presented about their future music pathways at our Rotary Dinner Meeting on Tuesday evening. Both were awarded $1000 to support them in their music career paths. James Noah Peterson plays the Alto saxophone, piano and guitar, has goals to continue to university, become a music producer, and work with other artists. He plans to use his Bursary to purchase further music equipment. Aleisha Spurling plays the piano, flute, piano and hopes to do further exams in music. She has currently in concert band 1 at the highschool, has participated in the School of Rock performances, the Rememberence Day celebration and Community Unlimited Feet Dance Studio. She has goals to explore arts pathways, participate in the Youth Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, study at Adelaide Uni and become a professional musician. Youth RALY Director Simon Sickerdick, President Jenny Alexander Walters and MBHS Music Teacher Ms Long selected the two from four applicants. John Scarvelis

  • FIRST: The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;
  • SECOND: High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity to serve society;
  • THIRD: The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian’s personal, business, and community life;
  • FOURTH: The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.
