What a great meeting we had last week.  It was great to get to talk to Kim Vanstone before the meeting and I learned a bit more about Operation Flinders.  Tyler’s story was inspiring.  He is an Operation Flinders success story.  His family are so proud of what he has achieved for himself and it was good to see them and some of his Op. Flinders friends supporting him. I and many Rotarians enjoyed catching up with Michael Bagshaw who is now a member of the Rotary Club of Mount Barker.  Michael became interested in Op. Flinders after hearing Johnathon Robran talk to our Club about it quite a few years ago.

Monday evening Jacquie Best, myself, Paul and Sally Willoughby, Lyn and Simon Sickerdick attended the Rotary Club of Mount Barker’s meeting.  Sally gave a presentation on her experience with Domestic Violence.  On this going Friday the Murraylands Domestic Violence Awareness Group and the Rural City of Murray Bridge are holding the annual Shout NO! To Domestic Violence event to be held at the Place of Courage 11.00 am to 12.15pm.  Come and show support to this movement.

Katherine Thiele and Clay Burgess are talking talking about their RYLA experience this coming week.  Caitlyn Lennon, Lyn and Simon Sickerdick, Rob and myself attended the RYLA Dinner. Katherine and Clay’s presentation is going to be a good one.

Tuesday evening is also going to be a Board Meeting and I will report on that next week.

This week’s quote from Mahatma Gandhi, is one I am sure most of you have heard before -      “Be the change you wish to see in the world.

Operation Flinders

Operation Flinders continues to support students at risk and what an example of a successful outcome we were treated to on Tuesday night. Tyler Langbridge now 19 years of age from the Northern Suburbs of Adelaide outlined his inspirational story. The Rotary Club of Murray Bridge has been a supporter of Operation Flinders since its inception over 30 years ago and also operated its own range of projects for students less at risk including Going Bush with Rotary with the philosophy of Prevention is better than cure. Both are of equal importance. Tyler was introduced by former Murray Bridge girl Kimberley Vanstone whose father John was a former Murray Bridge Rotary Club President. Kim is the Marketing and Events Manager for Operation Flinders, went to school at Unity College in Murray Bridge and then Seymour and has completed a Batchelor of Public Relations. She is a Board member of the Adelaide Business Hub. Also in attendance were other interested Murray Bridge community members Abbie Cross and Zoe Cross from MB High School, Graham Buttle, Mt Barker Rotarian (formerly MB) Michael Bagshaw both who work closely with the operation, and MB Police. Operation Flinders can be described as an Outdoor Adventure Therapy Program designed for young people at risk. It's an 8 to 9 hour drive to Yankaninna Station in the Flinders Ranges, an 8 day walking program with full backpack, tailored to each participant and its impact is enormous. Students are divided into groups of ten with up to 100 participating and with 70 support staff. The students experience climbing activities, indigenous culture, learn new lifeskills, experience the flora and fauna. It was an absolute pleasure to listen to Tyler tell his story confidently, with passion, and what it has meant for him. He now acts as mentor, he has increased levels of confidence, and looks forward to the future. 50 Schools around the State have now participated. John Scarvelis

Murray Bridge Remembrance Day 2024

Many people took the opportunity to attend a Remembrance Day Service conducted at the Murray Bridge War Memorial Sturt Reserve on Monday 11th November.

Elizabeth and I had the privilege of representing our Rotary Club at the service, and our Remembrance Wreath was laid as part of the Ceremony.

We were particularly impressed with the address given by The Reverend Paul Calnan, from the Murray Bridge Lutheran Church, and it is with his permission I share several paragraphs with you.

Murray Bridge Remembrance Day Address, November 11, 2024

“Good morning.

Today we gather here as a community to remember, and to give thanks for the countless Australians who have served our nation in times of war and conflict. On this Remembrance Day, we pause to acknowledge their courage, their sacrifices, and the freedoms they have secured for us. Standing here today, we are reminded that the lives we live in peace were bought at a great price. Their legacy and bravery are forever woven into the very fabric of our nation.

At the eleventh hour on the eleventh day of the eleventh month, we observe a moment of silence—a silence that speaks volumes. This silence honours the lives of those lost, the wounds borne by veterans, and the heartache of families who lost loved ones. It is a silence filled with gratitude, remembrance, and a commitment to carry forward the values for which they fought.

On this day, we also recognize that Remembrance Day is a time of reconciliation—a time to remember that we are part of a global community, and that the pain of war is shared across borders and generations. Conflict and war have touched every corner of the world, and many nations join us in observing this day of remembrance. As Australians, we are grateful for the alliances and friendships that have been forged through shared sacrifice. Today, we stand together not only as a nation but as part of a global community that longs for peace.”

I thank Paul for sharing these insightful thoughts with us, and for those who would like to read the whole address, I am circulating a complete copy via ClubRunner.

Elizabeth and Sam Cozens.

RSL Joint Meeting

Our recent Rotary Meeting was a combined one between the Rotary Club of Murray Bridge and the Rotary Club of Mobilong at the RSL on Eastside to view the RSL Military Museum. This Museum is one of Murray Bridge's best kept secrets and should be promoted more as it is of high quality and interest. Bob Perkins told us it was open on Thursdays and Fridays from 4.30 till 8pm manned by himself and or Allan Birt. It contains memorabilia from the first and second world wars and other conflicts collected by Murraylands participants including those from Cooks Plains. It's well worth a visit. John Scarvelis

Mrs Edwards Grave

Mrs Edwards grave has been given a little bit of TLC. Rotarians, after negotiating with Council began the task of returning the gravesite to its former splendour.
Mary Ann Edwards and her husband George were the first European settlers in Murray Bridge and played a large role in the development of the region.
