The Murray River STUDY HUB was the main topic at the Rotary Club of Murray Bridge meeting on Tuesday evening. Program Manager Vanessa Leigh and Student Advisor Shaun Harris from Regional Development Australia spoke about the new facility at the TAFE Campuses in Murray Bridge and Berri to support tertiary study with on line courses available to University, TAFE, and Vet courses. Foundation entry courses are also available to university undergraduates or to Masters or PhD courses. Currently these are on line and plan to become a mix of online and lectures by video link pending on demand. Support and advice is available on site in an open learning environment. It also caters for full time or part time students and will be freely available. Migrant and Refugee educational assistance is also available. The RDA's role is to address barriers in regional development, teritarry education, address leakage of the young to the major cities and the associated costs for regional families. Rotary has a role in indpendant evaluation of General Assistance or Industry Specific Scholarship programs. 65 students are currently using the study hub across the Region. "Come and have a chat soon and make your dreams come true" was Vanessa's invitation to students.
Mallee Emu Wren
There’s no pretending the devastation the Australian bushfires have caused to our ecosystems can be remedied overnight. But while the thought of losing so many animals is heart-breaking, there are still causes for hope left. ✨ In 2014, wildfires ripped through mallee scrub habitat housing the last-known population of Mallee Emu-wrens in South Australia, completely wiping them out. We, alongside a team of scientists and ecologists in the Threatened Mallee Bird Conservation Action Plan Implementation Team, worked quickly to establish a recovery plan for the tiny bird species. Using translocated birds from a Victorian population, we trialled the introduction of a recovery population in protected Ngarkat Conservation Park that was thankfully unaffected by the most recent fires. We’ve also built a breeding facility at Monarto Safari Park and are working with a substitute wren species to understand the husbandry needs of these birds in captivity, to look at establishing an insurance population of the species as a potential conservation tool. 🙌 As a conservation charity that exists to save species like the Mallee Emu-wren from extinction, we're so proud to be able to offer our animal husbandry expertise to assist in the recovery of some pretty awesome native species. 🐾 Find out more about our vital conservation work here: https://www.zoossa.com.au/conservation/

Not to mention the work the Rotary Club of Murray Bridge has done in build and designing the cages to house the birds. In addition the field support in surveys and monitoring. A great team effort with a lot of hours and variety of skills invested. The project is a classic model in practical rejuvination of a particularly vulnerable species after a major fire event and subsequent loss of habitat.
Murray Bridge Skate Park Event
The Rotary Club of Murray Bridge supported the Murray Bridge Skate Park Event at the Sturt Reserve Riverfront hosted by the Rural City of Murray Bridge. We cooked over 460 hamburgers with the lot, chicken and salad in Vietnamese rolls, a variety of fruit and bottled water for the large crowd. The Station had rappers, there was a climbing tower, laser games in the rage cage, mini golf, street art, and the skate park to entertain. The program was part of the Rural City of Murray Bridge Summer series of events for youth and families on the Sturt Reserve Riverfront. It was a free event.
