War hero, scientist, naturalist, spy, sub mariner, aviator, polar explorer, photographer, Wilkins was the most remarkable explorer of the 20th century.
We welcome your attendance as we learn more from Carolyn Spooner, formerly of the South Australian Library but now retired.
Attendance including dinner is $27 but if you wish only to hear the address, cost is $5.

The Rotary International Convention 2026 is taking place in Taipei, Taiwan from the 13th – 17th June– where Rotarians world-wide are gathering to experience the true international nature of Rotary – bringing together thousands of Rotarians from across the globe to celebrate service, friendship, and the power of creating lasting change - something that is still on my Rotary Bucket List of things to do – so for now I will use Rotary’s Social Media pages to keep up with the activities.
Locally we have been celebrating too, with our Club Assembly last Tuesday night. Club Service and Directors presented their reports to membership – outlining the success of the projects and service over the last 6 months and carry over projects for the first half of the new Rotary year. It always amazes me to hear of the diversity of our projects and the passion our club members have for these projects – makes me so proud to be a member of this club
Of course, Club Assembly always reminds us that the current Rotary year is almost over and a Handover is nearing. President-elect Simon and his team have this all under control and it looks like a great evening to celebrate the changing of the Guard along with all the great service from the last 12 months
Rob, Jenny and I met with Rural City of Murry Bridge staff to look at the dismantling of the Sturt Reserve Playgrounds in the near future – all part of the RORP (Rotary Overseas Repurposing Playgrounds) plans to keep these playgrounds out of landfill. Rob has taken photographs of all the playground components and is now busy coding everything for the dismantle; Jenny is looking at all the written documentation to meet Council and Rotary requirements and I have started the initial Risk Assessment documents. We will look to seek volunteer assistance with the dismantle as soon as we have a better idea on the frames from the council.
Our current Board is trialling a new time for Board meetings this week – starting at 4-00pm before the regular gathering – this is to alleviate some of the issues being faced by board members - travelling long distances, sometimes on their own, often late at night, after having attended a dinner gathering (eg this week going till 8-30pm) where driver safety is a major concern. If the meeting this week is successful, it may be something the new board will look at to continue into the new Rotary Year.

He was also a war correspondent, cinematographer, naturalist, geographer and pioneering climatologist Please confirm your attendance by Monday 10am as this is required by our hotel caterers.

Kate Mason Senior Ecologist with the Murraylands Landscape Board addressed the Rotary Club of Murray Bridge on the European Carp problem in the River Murray and in particular in SA. The problem is much more severe in South Australia due to the relatively slowing of river flow and wetlands making breeding better for the carp than anywhere else on the river. Control methods include mechanical traps limiting carp passage by size and drying out then refilling wetlands similarly to what occurs naturally. Some of this occurs on privately owned land. Teal Flat is a great example of this technique and the Loveday Mussells project where an estimated 1075 adult carp per 2 ha produced 60,200 carp when drained estimated at 361,200 tons preventing 30 billion eggs. In addition carp eat macroinvertebrates and zooplankton in competition with native fish. John Scarvelis
